sRGB vs. Adobe RGB vs. ProPhoto RGB: Which Color Space Should You Use?

If you’ve ever exported a photo from Lightroom or Photoshop, you’ve probably seen these three color space options:
- sRGB
- Adobe RGB (1998)
- ProPhoto RGB
So which one should you choose?
For most photographers sending finished files to a print lab, sRGB is the safest choice.
That might sound strange because Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB can hold a wider range of colors. It’s easy to assume that a larger color space automatically means a better print, but that isn’t always how it works.
What Is a Color Space?
A color space determines the range of colors that can be stored in a digital image.
The easiest way to understand it is to think of three different-sized boxes:
- sRGB is the smallest.
- Adobe RGB is larger.
- ProPhoto RGB is the largest.
A larger box can hold more colors, but that doesn’t mean your photograph actually contains those additional colors. Plenty of images fit completely within sRGB.
sRGB
sRGB is the most widely supported color space.
Computers, phones, websites, social media platforms, ordering systems, and most consumer devices are built to handle it correctly.
That makes sRGB a good choice when you want consistent, predictable color without worrying about how another program or device will interpret the file.
If you’re posting an image online, emailing it to someone, or sending a finished file to a lab that doesn’t request something different, sRGB is usually the right option.
Adobe RGB (1998)
Adobe RGB can hold a wider range of colors than sRGB, especially in certain greens and cyans.
That additional range can be useful in a fully color-managed printing workflow. The important part is that the entire workflow has to support Adobe RGB, including the software, monitor, print lab, and output equipment.
If something in that chain doesn’t recognize the profile correctly, the image may look dull, flat, or washed out.
Adobe RGB can be useful, but simply choosing it during export does not automatically improve your print.
ProPhoto RGB
ProPhoto RGB is much larger than both sRGB and Adobe RGB. It can represent such a wide range of color that some of those colors fall outside what we can see or reproduce in print. Its biggest advantage is during editing. Working in a large color space gives Lightroom and Photoshop more room to make adjustments without throwing away color information too early. This can help prevent clipping when making major changes to color, saturation, or exposure.
That doesn’t mean ProPhoto RGB is the best format for your finished file. In most cases, it’s better used behind the scenes while editing.
Once the image is finished, you can export it into the color space that makes the most sense for where it’s going.
Will a Larger Color Space Produce a Better Print?
Not necessarily.
The final print is affected by the image itself, the printer, the ink, the paper, and the way the file is prepared.
If your image doesn’t contain colors outside the sRGB range, exporting it as Adobe RGB won’t create new colors. If the printer or paper can’t reproduce those extra colors, having them in the file won’t make a difference either.
In many cases, a properly prepared sRGB file will print the same as an Adobe RGB version of that image.
The larger color space only helps when the image contains colors that can benefit from it and the entire printing workflow knows what to do with them.
Why Do Some Labs Request Adobe RGB?
Some professional labs have fully color-managed workflows that can take advantage of the additional colors available in Adobe RGB.
If a lab specifically asks you to send Adobe RGB files, follow their recommendation. Their equipment and workflow may be set up for it.
The same applies if a lab requests sRGB.
Sending an Adobe RGB file to a system expecting sRGB can cause more problems than it solves. When in doubt, ask the lab instead of assuming the largest option is best.
What Does Capture On Recommend?
For most customers, we recommend exporting finished files in sRGB.
It’s predictable, widely supported, and works well for the vast majority of photographs we print. It also reduces the chance of unexpected color shifts caused by a missing or incorrectly interpreted color profile.
If you’re working on a color-critical project with a fully managed workflow, talk to us before exporting. There may be situations where using Adobe RGB makes sense, but that decision should be based on the image and the printing process.
A Simple Editing Workflow
For most photographers, we recommend keeping it simple:
- Edit your RAW files normally in Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One.
- Let the software work within its larger internal editing space.
- Export the finished image as sRGB unless your print lab asks for something different.
This lets you keep the flexibility of a large color space while editing, then create a finished file that can be handled correctly by almost any device or ordering system.
Our Recommendation
If you aren’t sure which color space to choose, use sRGB.
It works well for the web, it prints beautifully, and it gives you the most predictable results.
Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB both have a purpose, but they aren’t automatic upgrades. Choosing the largest color space doesn’t guarantee a better print.
The right color space is the one that fits your workflow and where the image is going.
